Discover The Total Hillier Creek Winery Experience That Outdates Us All!
The Hillier Creek Winery experience, beginning in the early 19th century, is absolutely incredible! Dating back to the war of 1812, the land that is now a beautiful vineyard was actually granted to a surgeon who served in the war and was noted for being the first inoculator of the smallpox vaccine.
And what was once a foundationless barn, owned by the Badgley family in 1860, is now an incredible winery, cellar, patio and tasting room for guests from all over Ontario!
How did we get here?
The story is long, and frankly we’re too busy making wine and rolling pizza dough to go over it all. But if you’ve ever visited Hillier Creek Winery, you know that the story comes with the visit! Because we wouldn’t be where we are today without it.
The Very Beginnings of Hillier Creek Winery in Prince Edward County
If we were to travel back in time to the early 1800’s, we would meet Dr. Latham, the surgeon who served in the War of 1812 – fought between Canada and the United States of America. It’s interesting to note that Dr. Latham never actually chose to reside on his gifted property, but rather lived and died in Kingston, Ontario.
For generations, the land of Hillier Creek Winery was actually well-known as the Stapleton Farm. If you’ve been to our winery in Prince Edward County, you can probably guess why!
The homestead is actually built on an adjoining road that still carries the name – Stapleton Road!
During the 19th century, the farm was more locally known as the Badgley Farm, as it was owned by generations of Badgleys. This farm nurtured incredible growth, and not only via crops, dairy and animals! Lois Badgley actually fostered 24 teenagers on this property – nurturing a home and family.

From The Ground Up – Literally!
We love telling the story of what is now the beautiful Hillier Creek Winery barn, but was once a foundationless structure built directly on the ground.
When Amber and Kemp Stewart purchased the property in the year 2000, it had actually not been lived in for 15 years! The barn itself, built roughly 140 years prior, required more than just a little bit of lovin’ in order to get it back up on its feet.
In fact, the barn went through a series of renovations, including:
- Being raised entirely, which led to the discovery of 2 underground streams and a 9000-gallon cistern being installed,
- Having a cribbing system installed to hold, and essentially suspend, the barn (alternating timbers four inches at a time),
- And the foundation being finished, allowing for the structure to be properly stabilized.
Come the year 2009, the barn was complete and the farm was able to produce its very first award winning wines!
